Stephen Baker
Working out of a studio space in Collingwood, Melbourne, Stephen Baker has garnered acclaim over recent years for creating sketches and paintings that depict people in the human environment. Through his work, Baker elevates the monotony of city and suburban life, drawing on personal experience to recreate common scenes, and then pare back the detail to reveal subjects in their most vulnerable and basic form. Using colour and geometric shapes, Baker creates stylised worlds that blur the boundaries between escapism and reality. But what is most idiosyncratic about Baker’s work is the way he heightens these worlds with colour and tone, creating a monochrome that is lucid, romantic, and full of escapism.
